Talking about Devon in Jilted
I've been so thrilled to have already gotten some lovely reviews for Jilted, and the positive response to this story and the series has been so gratifying!

I wanted to talk a little about my heroine in Jilted, Devon. One review for Jilted commented about how poorly Devon communicated her feelings with those she loved, and that it was frustrating knowing that a conversation could have avoided all that pain and heartache. This makes it sounds like communication is easy and everyone does it well. Wrong!

Communication is one of the biggest problems in relationships. It's not as simple as just talking about things. Sure, anyone can talk. But there are right ways to say things, and there are ways to say things that can hurt and make things worse. And when it comes to talking about feelings and our deepest fears and secrets - it's not that easy. Maybe for some people it might be, but I can say for me personally it is not easy for me to share those things, to make myself that vulnerable. True intimacy and love require it, but digging that deep is hard.

Devon grew up with a father who didn't want to talk about those things, after his wife left him and Devon. A stoic, proud man, he didn't want to let on how much that hurt or humiliated him. This is true of many men -- expressing feelings is considered wimpy. Thus, growing up with her father, Devon learned that that was how you dealt with feelings -- you kept them hidden deep inside and didn't let on if you were in pain.  And yes, that reluctance to admit her fears and how she really felt was a barrier to her relationship with Josh the first time around. But to say that things could have been resolved just by talking is a superficial observation, because opening yourself up and making yourself vulnerable in that way is definitely not an easy thing to do.

Of course, a good story has character growth and Devon comes to know this about herself, difficult as it is to admit her failing to herself. It takes courage to get past those things and I hope Devon's growth is ultimately satisfying to readers.

Jilted is out today!

I'm so excited for the first book of the Promise Harbor Wedding series to be out today! We've been talking a lot about this multi-author series so you may already know a little about it, but it's a four book series that centers around a wedding that goes all wrong. Each author took a member of the wedding party and wrote their romance story. It's not a series where the stories happen sequentially, but rather they all happen at the same time. Yes it was a little trick writing them that way, but it was also fun and very exciting to work with such talented authors!

Here's the blurb for the series:

Into even the best-planned wedding a little chaos must fall...

Join the residents of Promise Harbor, Massachusetts for the wedding of the season! Or, at least, for the most entertaining wedding of the season. The groom's been left at the altar, the Maid of Honor is MIA, the Best Man is in handcuffs and the bride has been swept off her feet--literally.

There's definitely love in the air, but things are going to get a little crazy before anyone gets to happily ever after.

Apology to readers:

I've been made aware that there are a few typos in Jilted and I want to apologize for that. This is a case where there was a bit of a rush to get the book edited and formatted so it would be available at bookstores like Amazon and B&N on release day, and that resulted in a few things slipping by the numerous sets of eyes that look at a book during the editing process. I want my books to be as close to perfect as they can, so I want to apologize to readers for these oversights.

I'm doing a small tour with Goddeess Fish Promotions and having a contest! I hope you'll check out some of the stops!

Promise Harbor Wedding Book 1

March 19, 2013

The wedding’s off but the honeymoon is on...
Devon can do this. She can show up at her ex-boyfriend Josh’s wedding, even though he’s marrying her ex-best-friend. She can show everyone she’s happy with her fabulous life in Boston, her great career, her amazing shoes — and she can show everyone she’s over him.

Truth is, her life isn’t so fabulous. She’s just been downsized out of her job, her Jimmy Choos won’t pay her rent, and...she’s still heartbroken that Josh chose family over her. The real reason she’s enduring this wedding is that her next stop is nearby Greenbush Island, her last hope of finding a new job.

Josh knows marrying long-time friend Allie will make everyone happy after the rough time their families have been through, and since the woman he really wanted to marry chose her career and big city life over himwhy not?

But the perfect wedding turns into a perfect disaster when Allie leaves him at the altar for another man. He never saw that coming! But hey, Devon’s there, offering to help him look for Allie on Greenbush Island, where he’d planned their honeymoon. Only, all they find are their old feelings for each other and a temptation to risk their hearts one more time...
Warning: This book contains a firefighter hot enough to ignite flames, a woman who doesn’t want to get burned again, a honeymoon suite but no honeymoon, and sex not on the beach (sorry).

Kelly's Recipes
This page features recipes that appear (or could appear!) in my books. I talk a lot about food and drink in my stories so thought I'd share some of these recipes.

Stoned Stew
From The Complete Best of Bridge Cookbook

Lance Thomson Photographic

This recipe is for Matt, from With Strings Attached. He's a brewmaster who likes to create new beers and this is a great recipe for one of his brown ales. (It's actually pretty similar to the boeuf carbonnade recipe below)

3 lbs stewing beef, cut up
1/4 cup flour
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp seasoned pepper (I LOVE seasoned pepper)
1/4 oil
2 large onions, thinly sliced
1 can sliced mushrooms (I used FRESH mushrooms, sliced)
1 can beef broth (I use Campbell's Stock First)
1 bottle beer (I used a brown ale)
2 tbsp vinegar
2 tbsp sugar
2 cloves garlic minced
1 tsp thyme
3 bay leaves
2 tbsp parsley.

In plastic bag combine flour, salt and pepper. Trim beef cubes and shake in flour mixture. Heat oil in skillet and brown meat, turning often. Add sliced onions, mushrooms with liquid, beef broth, beer, vinegar, sugar, garlic, thyme and bay leaves.

Kelly's note:  My pan wasn't big enough to hold everything. I like to cook a lot and have leftovers, so I browned the meat and transferred it to a large casserole dish, then sauteed the onions until soft, then the mushrooms and garlic and the rest of the ingredients, then added that all to the casserole.

Simmer, covered, adding water if necessary, for 2 hours. Add parsley. Serve over hot buttered noodles.

Kelly's note: I baked it in the oven at 350 degrees for 2 hours

Chicken with Artichokes and Lemons
Black olives

In "Taming Tara" family cook Nina makes this recipe when Joe comes for dinner with Tara and her family. Since the Lockhart family are olive growers in California, it makes sense that they would use olives in many of their meals.

1 chicken cut into 8 serving pieces (I use boneless, skinless chicken breasts because that's my preference - I use 4 and cut them in half)
2 tbsp olive oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/4 cup dry sherry
1 1/2 cups chicken stock
2 bay leaves
1 1/2 tsp dry oregano
1/4 tsp pepper
1 lemon
16 black olives
1 jar marinated artichoke hearts
2 tbps fresh parsley

Heat oil in large heavy skillet. Brown chicken, in batches if necessary, and transfer to plate.

Pour off all but 1 tbs fat from skillet. Cook onions and garlic until softened, 3-4 minutes. Pour in sherry, stirring to scrape up brown bits from pan. Add stock, bay leaves, oregano and pepper. Arrange chicken in pan in single layer.

Peel lemon, removing white pith. Slice lemon and remove seeds, then add to pan along with olives. Bring to boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer 30 minutes. (Note if you're using boneless chicken breasts, this will be only about 15 minutes).

Nestle the artichoke hearts among chicken pieces and simmer for about 10 minutes longer or until chicken is no longer pink inside. (Again if using boneless chicken breasts, this will only be a few minutes more to heat the artichoke hearts.) Discard the bay leaves.

Using a slotted spooon, transfer chicken, lemon, artichokes and olives to a platter. Boil the remaining liquid over high heat for 3 to 5 minutes or until thickened slightly. Pour over chicken and garnish with parsley.

Makes 4 to 6 servings.
Recipe is from Canadian Living Cooking Collection

I like this served with couscous and a green vegetable.

Sexpresso Night Pork Tenderloin
Lance Thomson Photographic

This recipe doesn't actually appear in my book Sexpresso Night, but since coffee is an important ingredient, I thought it was an appropriate dish to go with the book. Don't worry - this doesn't taste like coffee, it just tastes rich and delicious and is impressive if you have guests - very sophisticated.

Sauce:
1 tbsp butter
1/4 cup finely chopped onion
1 tsp minced garlic
1/4 cup bourbon (yum!)
1 cup beef stock
6 tbsp cream
1 tsp finely chopped fresh thyme
salt & pepper

Rub
4 tsp finely ground dark-roasted coffee
4 tsp finely chopped fresh thyme
2 tsp kosher salt
1 tsp freshly ground black pepper

2 pork tenderloins

To make the sauce:

In a medium saucepan, melt the butter. Add the onion and cook until tender, about 3 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent browning. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute more. Remove saucepan from the heat, carefully add the bourbon and return to heat (watch out so it doesn't catch fire!) Reduce heat to medium and add the beef stock and cream. Simmer until about 1/3 cup liquid remains, 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the thyme, season with salt and pepper to taste.

To make the rub:

In a small bowl, mix the rub ingredients with your fingers.

Bring tenderloins to room temperature. Trim all fat. Lightly brush all over with oil and spread the rub evenly over, pressing the spices into the meat. Grill until barely pink in the center. Remove from grill and let rest about five minutes. Slice diagonally. Bring the sauce to a simmer and spoon over the sliced pork. Garnish with sprigs of fresh thyme.

Steak Rub
Steak...on the Grill

Here's a rub for grilling or barbecuing steak (whatever you call it where you live!) that appears in my book Lost and Found when Krissa and Nate are grilling up steaks and drinking wine:

1 1/2 tsp whole black peppercorns
1 1/2 tsp mustard seed
1 1/2 tsp paprika
1 1/2 tsp light brown sugar
1 1/2 tsp sea salt
1 1/2 tsp garlic powder
1 1/2 tsp onion powder
1 1/2 tsp ground coffee
1 tsp red pepper flakes
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper

Grind this all up in a spice grinder (I use an extra coffee grinder for grinding spices). Brush the steaks with oil and the press the rub into the meat. It makes lots, but it keeps. Also you can use it on pork, too, I've done pork tenderoin and pork chops with it.

The first recipe I'm posting is used in my book Dream Girl. Zach is a brewmaster, the creative force behind Surf Coast Brewery. He likes to cook and he often uses beer in recipes. This is one he makes for Ashlyn:  Beef Carbonnade. The recipe comes from Canadian Living Magazine. This makes 8 servings but you can adjust up or down. Zach used a Brown Ale in the book but you can use other beer as well. This is good with potatoes, but I also like it with noodles.

Beef Carbonnade

Beef Carbonnade with buttered noodles
Ingredients:

3 lbs (1.5 kg) chuck or round steak
2 tbsp (25 mL) flour
2 tsp (10 mL) each paprika and salt
1 tsp (5 mL) pepper
1/4 cup (50 mL) butter or oil
6 large onions, sliced
3 cloves garlic, minced
4 carrots, cut_into large chunks
1/2 cup (125 mL) each chopped celery leaves and fresh parsley
1/2 tsp (2 mL) dried thyme
1 bay_leaf
1/3 cup (75 mL) flour
2-1/2 cups (625 mL) beer 3 tbsp (50 mL) packed brown_sugar
2 tbsp (25 mL) cider_vinegar
1/3 cup (75 mL) finely chopped fresh parsley
-->
Preparation:

Trim excess fat from meat; cut into 1-inch (2.5 cm) cubes. In large bowl, combine 2 tablespoons (25 mL) flour, paprika, salt and pepper; add meat and toss to coat.

In large heavy saucepan or Dutch oven, melt half of the butter over medium-high heat; brown beef, in batches and adding more butter if necessary. Remove meat and set aside.

Add remaining butter to pan; cook onions and garlic; stirring and adding 1 tablespoon (15 mL) water if pan is browning too much, for 5 minutes or until softened. Stir in carrots, celery leaves, parsley, thyme and bay leaf; stir in 1/3 cup (75 mL) flour.

Return meat to pan; pour in beer. Add sugar; bring to boil. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer for 1-1/2 hours. Uncover and simmer for 1-1/2 hours longer or until meat is tender and sauce is slightly thickened.

Stir in vinegar; simmer, uncovered, for 10 minutes. Remove bay leaf. (Make-ahead: Stew can be cooled, covered and refrigerated for up to 3 days; reheat over medium-low heat for about 45 minutes.)

Garnish with finely chopped parsley.

Hat Trick is now out!
KellyJamieson HatTrick 200 Author Feature: Kelly Jamieson So many readers have emailed me and messaged me about when the next Heller Brothers book will be out and HERE IT IS!!

I wanted to blog a little about the book so people know what to expect. This is not Matt Heller's story - I do have one planned for him, but there are reasons I didn't write his now. And here they are.

When I wrote Logan’s book, One Man Advantage, I set it in the fall, when the NHL trading deadline is, because Logan gets traded and his life turned upside down, which meant it happened close to the due date of Brianne’s pregnancy (from Breakaway). In One Man Advantage, in early December, the baby is born. Jase’s brothers are still pushing him to get a paternity test, as they did in Faceoff. But there was never a good way to work that result into One Man Advantage, which was really Nicole’s story. And so readers (and I!) were still left wondering — was Jase really the father of Brianne’s baby?

I knew I had to wrap up that story thread. And I have one more book planned, for youngest brother Matt. But at only age 19 in the first three books, I'm going to have to jump ahead at least 8-10 years to make him a hero the age I usually write. How would I work in a detail like the paternity of the baby, which at that point would be pretty old news? Especially if the baby wasn’t Jase’s? (I still didn’t know the answer at that point.) It would seem pretty obviously planted just to tie that up, and I didn’t like that. I also felt that readers would want to be there when that news was revealed, to experience the emotion of the moment, whatever the outcome, rather than read about something that happened ten years ago.

So seeing as the last story ended in early December, I decided to get all the Heller brothers home together for Christmas, and I wrote Hat Trick. Jase and Remi have just got the results of the paternity test. Tag and Kyla also have surprising news. And Nicole is meeting Logan’s overwhelming family for the first time in their new relationship, at a stressful time of year. We get to revisit all three brothers and their girlfriends and at last have the answer we’ve all been waiting for.

I never intended that thread to draw out through four stories, but somehow it did, and I find it so funny that I didn’t know the answer either until I wrote Face Off!

So now we just have to have patience as I try to find enough time to write Matt's story. Believe me, I want it done as much as anyone!

Now available: Felt Tips!
I can't say this was the craziest project I've ever worked on. That honor would have to go to the parodies I penned along with the other Nine Naughty Novelists. But when I saw Tiffany Reisz Tweeting about this idea, I had to laugh, thinking it was a joke. When she said I should contribute a story, I laughed more. I can't write short stories. But then I got this idea...and I wrote the story over my lunch hour at work one day. It was one of those things that reminds me why I love to write - it's FUN! And here it is - not a joke! A real anthology of forty erotic stories by different authors. Proceeds are going to charity  - check it out!

Merry Menage!
Welcome to the Merry Ménage Blog Hop!

For those who don't know me, I write hot romance and yes, some of them feature Ménage à trois romances. Now, that can mean a variety of things - that can be a one-time sexy threesome;  or a long-term committed ménage à trois relationship. It can be two girls and a guy, or two guys and a girl (or three of the same sex, although I've never written that :-)

The first ménage book I wrote was an F/F/M ménage (Love Me) about a woman who’s a little bi-curious and gets carried away with some girl on girl flirting. (STEAMY FACTOID: Although a few readers considered what she did to be cheating on her partner, a recent survey by Glamour Magazine indicates that 86% of men would not consider it cheating if their partner made out with another woman.) Isn’t the F/F/M ménage the ubiquitous fantasy, especially for men? But hey, lots of women are curious too.

Then I realized how popular the “two men, one woman” fantasy is. (And how hot it is.) So I decided to try writing one of those. My first ménage book with two men was Conference Call, a M/F/M ménage where a threesome spontaneously happens while they’re all away at a conference. Two of the three go on to have a relationship, but probably never another threesome. That’s the one-time-only threesome that will never happen again

Then I saw the popularity of the M/M/F fantasy (and M/M romance in general) and I decided to explore that too. In that first M/M/F ménage (2 Hot 2 Handle) the men were a committed couple who wanted a woman to complete their relationship. The three of them live together happily ever after.
Now, I have to say in my mind, the “HEA for all three” story is a little unrealistic. Or even a lot unrealistic. Sure, from the woman’s perspective, having two men around would be a good thing when the furnace breaks down or the car has a flat tire. I know my husband isn’t around enough to keep up with all the household repairs that need doing. A second husband could be great. And that’s not even in bed! If you like men, why wouldn’t two be better than one? Two mouths for kissing, nibbling and sucking. Four hands for caressing and rubbing and exploring. Nice. With two guys, stamina (ahem) wouldn’t be an issue. Think of the multiple orgasms!

But from the men’s perspective? Seriously, how many dudes are willing to share their woman with another guy?

In real life, I think it’s pretty far-fetched. As a writer, though, that just challenges me to write that story and make it believable!
My two most recent menage books are One Wicked Night and Rule of Three. Both are M/M/F menage stories, but again they're different. In One Wicked Night, the men were in a relationship of sorts, but didn’t expect to spend their lives together. Tyler always figured one day he’d meet a woman he’d fall in love with, get married and have kids. I won’t give away the story by telling the ending. In Rule of Three, a man and a woman are a committed couple and a second man joins in.

And my next ménage book coming out in January, With Strings Attached, involves another threesome that doesn’t end in a committed relationship between all three. This kind of scenario seems more realistic to me, but the popularity of the HEA for all three characters can’t be denied.

One type of ménage story I haven’t written is F/M/F. Somehow from the woman’s perspective that doesn’t seem so appealing, and assuming most readers of romance are women, that one might not go over so well.

What’s your preference? F/F/M? M/F/M? M/M/F?

I'm giving away winner's choice of any of my ménage stories - check my website to find out more!
