FALL-ing in Love - with Mari Carr and Status Update

Release days are always fun, but the fact that I’m sharing this one with the incredible Kelly Jamieson makes it even better! I was so pleased when I discovered my newest Samhain story, Status Update, was releasing with Kelly’s Rhythm of Three. Kelly and I have had the opportunity to hang out at conferences in the past. She is fun, funny and absolutely lovely!
Status Update is the third book in a series of stories revolving around my Wine Girls (Kelly should be in this club given her love of vino—lol). I really enjoy writing books that are part of a series because it allows me to get so much deeper into the heads/lives of my characters. Their story isn’t limited to just one book. In this series, all the characters continue to appear in the other books, so I don’t have to say goodbye to them with the words The End.
The Second Chances series has been a really cool challenge for me as an author because all six of the stories take place during the same year. I swear my notes about who was where when are longer than the actual books…and I’m only halfway through the series! LOL. Fix You and Full Moon were the first two books and they are available now.
Today, Kelly invited me to share a spicy snippet of Status Update with y’all. Be sure to stop by my blog because Kelly was my guest yesterday and she shared a bit of Rhythm of Three!
Excerpt:
“Are you happy?”
Laura didn’t know how to reply. When she’d finally gotten up the nerve to ask Mason for a divorce, happiness had been her goal. She’d spent years in a relationship with a man who had no capacity for joy. Laura suspected he was bipolar—or perhaps suffering from depression—but Mason insisted he was fine, refused to go to the doctor and blamed her for his inherent unhappiness. For years, his misery took its toll. She’d left Mason because she wanted to be happy again. But was she?
Bryan interrupted her thoughts. “I’m sorry. I didn’t realize that was a hard question.”
“Let’s just say I’m searching for my happiness.”
“Is that why you’re here tonight? Forgive me for saying it, but this doesn’t seem like it would be your normal environment.”
Laura laughed. “It’s not. At all. My friends dragged me along. And yeah, I think this is part of my quest to rediscover the Laura I used to be. The one who laughed and danced and enjoyed life.”
Bryan studied her face. “Is it working?”
Laura’s face hurt from smiling. She was tipsy, relaxed and she’d laughed more tonight than in the entire previous year. Running into Bryan after so many years apart was the cherry on top of an excellent evening. “Yeah. It is.”
“Good.”
The band announced they were taking a short break. Trina walked over to join them. “Hey, Dad. Thanks,” she said as Bryan handed her the glass of water. “What did you think of that set?”
“Best one of the night.”
Trina beamed at her father’s praise. “Wait ’til you hear the last set.”
Bryan turned toward her. “Trina, I’d like you to meet my best friend from high school. This is Laura Riley.”
“Sanders.” Laura corrected him softly. She was still torn over whether or not to take her maiden name back. With her kids grown and out of school, she couldn’t think of a reason not to, but given Katie’s unhappiness over the divorce, Laura hadn’t wanted to add yet another upset to an injury that wasn’t healing very fast.
“Sanders,” Bryan corrected.
“You’re an incredible musician, Trina. Your music has blown me away. My daughter would absolutely love that song you played a little bit earlier. Was it called ‘Soul’?”
“’My Soul’,” Trina said. “I wrote that.”
“No way! That was my favorite song of the night.”
Trina smiled. “We’re getting ready to cut our first CD in a couple weeks and I wasn’t sure if I should push for that song to be included. Now I think I will.”
“I’d buy your CD for that song.”
“Wow. Thanks, Ms. Sanders.”
“Call me Laura.”
Someone called Trina’s name and she turned toward the stage. “I have to get back up there. We’re trying to figure out which song to finish with.” Trina gave Bryan a quick kiss on the cheek. “Nice to meet you, Laura.”
“You too.”
While the band was on a break, a canned recording of dance music blared through the speakers. Will Smith’s “Switch” came on.
“Oh my God, I love this song.”
Bryan grinned and pointed to the dance floor. “Should we show these young kids how it’s done?”
Laura raised her hand to refuse. “Hell no. I’ve been told my dancing is out of style.”
“Screw ’em.” Bryan took her hand, dragging her into the throng of bodies. He grasped her waist, pulling her close. They began to move in time to the music, their gazes connected. Laura laughed when he spun her, mimicking the other dancers around them with the same bumping and grinding moves. Funny how the same too-close contact with the man-child Kevin had squicked her out, but with Bryan it was awakening all sorts of dirty desires.
Laura let the alcohol, the music, the flashing lights and the heat take over as she moved sinuously against Bryan. Her libido kicked in with a vengeance, taking her unaware. His hands on her waist reminded her of a time when sex was exciting, fun, something she looked forward to. How long had it been since she felt this way?
She twisted, wrapping her arms around Bryan’s shoulders, laughing when he placed a firm hand on her lower back and pushed her into a dip that was so sexual and hot, Laura couldn’t believe they weren’t setting off the smoke detectors.
“You look beautiful, Laura. How the hell did I miss this in high school? If I hadn’t been such a blind fool, I’d have been on you like white on rice.”
She rolled her eyes, grinning at his compliment. “We became friends when both of us were in the awkward middle school stage. Somehow I don’t think we ever managed to overlook that. You look incredible too, by the way.”
He was sexy as sin. She wondered how he’d respond if she ran her hand along his chest, maybe letting it drift even lower until she found his cock. Would he enjoy such an inappropriate touch? Would he accept an invitation to come back to her place for more?
Shit. She was starting to sound like Josie who’d developed a must-have-sex-soon obsession lately. Time to rein in the hormones.
Laura hadn’t lied about their geeky looks in school. She’d gone through a very unattractive Dorothy Hamill hairstyle phase, complete with braces, while Bryan had sported a crew cut and thick glasses. Neither of them had managed to outgrow that unattractiveness until sophomore year. By then, the friendship was solid, and neither of them was interested in messing with the status quo.
She was tempted now. Holy crap, was she tempted.
Bryan’s hands slid along her waist, finding the tiny bit of skin revealed by her lifted arms. Was she imagining the sensual stroke of his fingers?
Wishful thinking?
He pulled her closer, their faces only inches apart. Heat coursed through her. Sure, the room was warm from so many gyrating bodies in a small space, but she didn’t think it was the exercise or crowd that was leaving her so hot and bothered.
She ran her fingers through Bryan’s shaggy salt and pepper hair. He’d lost the crew cut and embraced the waves he’d cursed during their younger years. His face had matured, as he’d shed the clean-cut boy-next-door look. His jaw was rough with a five o’clock shadow and there were laugh lines around his eyes that gave his face character. In a word, he was handsome.
And she was completely attracted to him.
She wasn’t sure where those feelings were coming from. She’d sworn with her divorce that she was finished with men. Laura had had enough male moodiness and so-so sex to last her a lifetime. She’d declared good riddance and hadn’t questioned that decision.
Until now. Her sex drive had reemerged, screaming out loud and clear that it wasn’t finished yet.
Bryan’s hand slipped beneath her blouse, touching her bare back, using his strength to guide them in the dance.
It was sex to music, just as Georgie said. Laura pressed her hips closer, unsurprised to feel Bryan’s hard cock. He studied her face, then winked.
Her smile grew. “You always were a shameless flirt.”
“And you were always ready to take a walk on the wild side.”
Laura turned her face away, staring at the dancers without seeing them. She couldn’t remember being that person, but as Bryan’s hands roamed over her skin, she wanted to escape the bonds of practicality. She longed to be uninhibited, carefree…wild.
“Hey, Laura!”
Laura caught sight of Kristen approaching her, shoving her way through the crowd.
“We’re getting ready to go. Georgie overindulged on the shots and I’m afraid it’s not going to end well. Jason and Nick offered to drive us home. Okay?”
Laura stepped away from Bryan. “Sure. Give me a minute?”
Kristen took a long look at Bryan, then gave her a surprised, but approving, smile. “I’ll give you two if you make sure to get his phone number.”
Bryan chuckled at Kristen’s matchmaking as she walked away. “Exchanging phone numbers sounds like a good idea to me.”
Bryan led Laura back to where her friends were waiting. Georgie was definitely past the point of no return as Nick held her up. Kristen and Jason were settling the tab. “Looks like we better roll. Will you really join Facebook? There are quite a few of our friends from school on there and…” She paused, wondering if she was being too forward.
“And?” he prompted.
“I can send you my phone number through a private message.”
He nodded. “Yeah. I’ll join. Might be fun to see what some of the gang is up to. And I’d like to see you again. Catch up.”
“Laura?” Kristen said. “Ready?”
“Yeah.” Laura pointed her finger, making a circle around her face. “I’ll Facebook you.”
He laughed at her silly gesture, then put his pinky and thumb to his mouth and ear, mimicking a phone. “I’ll call you.”

Status Update – Blurb
Some things never change. Others never stay the same. Thank God.
Second Chances, Book 3
Laura Sanders thought post-divorce life would be simple. What a rude awakening to realize that after too many years as a wife and mother, she’s stuck in a rut so deep she’s forgotten how to have fun.
Determined that this year will be different, she sets a New Year’s goal to rediscover the woman she used to be—the one who loved to dance, to laugh, to kiss.
When Bryan Sinclair spots his best friend from high school in the Blue Moon bar, he wonders how the hell he failed to notice her beauty and vitality all those years ago. Laura’s confession that she plans to experience lost opportunities tempts him into joining her on the journey.
Together they make up for lost time, in and out of the bedroom. But there’s one area in which Laura has no plans to change the status quo—her heart. And Bryan has his work cut out convincing her to take another chance. On him. On forever.
Warning: This story contains sex at Rocky Horror, sex at a Jimmy Buffett concert, sex on the stairs, sex on the dining-room table, sex on the dance floor, and even sex in a bed.
Releasing October 29, Status Update is currently available for pre-order at AmazonSamhain, and Barnes and Noble.

FALL-ing in Love - with Cat Johnson and Bull!

The beauty of being an author—other than that we can work in our pajamas—is getting to know other authors. So when Mari Carr discovered that she, Kelly Jamieson, and I all had new releases on the same day, of course we wanted to do something to celebrate together. Besides the Rafflecopter contest we have going where you can win great reads from the three of us, you get a sneak peek into our new releases too.

A huge thank you to Kelly for letting me take over her blog for the day to shout about my new release. I have BULL coming out from Samhain on Tuesday. lt’s a bit bittersweet since BULL, MATT (coming in November) and THE COMMANDER (coming in December) wrap up the Red, Hot & Blue series that I have been working on since the year I first got published in romance way back in 2006. The series was a lot of fun to write and I hope just as much fun for readers.

Please enjoy the below excerpt from BULL!

~Cat Johnson

BULL (Red, Hot & Blue, Book 10) by Cat Johnson

When the going gets tough, the tough go out with a bang...

Spec Op “Bull” Ford is as big as his nickname. His team, the civilians he protects, whether they know it or not, all depend on him. But beneath his stony exterior beats the heart of a caring man—unless he’s crossed.

Between her job as professional harpist and fending off an ex-boyfriend who won’t take the hint, Marly feels like a circus juggler. She doesn’t need some oversized, overzealous security guard accusing her of being a terrorist—as if a five-foot-nothing woman in a ball gown could threaten anyone.

Though when the real terrorists strike, she’s more than grateful to have Bull at her side…or on top, which certainly makes what could be her last breaths memorable.

But after Bull takes the brunt of the explosion, Marly is left with feelings for a man who doesn’t remember who she is. And by the time the red-hot memories come flooding back, the trail to her heart may have gone cold.

Warning: Contains explosive sexual encounters—literally!

PREORDER for October 29:

EXCERPT:

“What are you looking for, sweetheart?” The deep voice vibrated through her back and into her. He pulled them both to the wall and flipped on the lights with one elbow. A small, high window interrupted one wall. Reflected in its glass she saw the hulk she’d noticed before.

He spun her around and the hand over her mouth moved and grabbed her chin. She stared up into blue eyes narrowed in anger. He was big. She’d dated men who were six feet tall before, her ex John being one of them. Marly had found tall guys tended to like petite women, she didn’t know why. Maybe it made them feel even bigger. Who knew? But this guy—he was well over six feet tall. He was broad too, and from the feel of him it wasn’t fat. He was solid muscle. If he didn’t seem to want to crush her with his bare hands, she’d say he was attractive. She was having trouble getting past the murderous expression though. It kind of took away from her admiration of his overall physical appearance.

“I asked you a question.” He shook her, his hands clamped tightly around her upper arms.

“I came to get my bag.” What the hell was going on? Did he think she’d come to assassinate whomever he was protecting? It was easy enough to prove she hadn’t. There was nothing more dangerous in her bag than her tuning key. She could maybe jab the point of that in somebody’s eye, but that’s about it.

His gaze moved to her bag on the floor. “Really. Why don’t we see what you’ve got in there?”

He tucked her under one arm and half dragged, half carried her toward the bag. Her feet hardly touched the floor along the way. With his one free hand, he dumped the contents of the bag onto the canvas harp cover.

She hissed as she watched her brand new forty-dollar electronic tuner spill out onto the floor. “Careful.”

His eyes opened wide and he drew in a sharp breath of his own. “I bet you want me to be careful. Shit. Matt, I think I’ve found the detonator.”

“Matt?” What the hell was he talking about? Marly shook her head. “My name’s not Matt.”

There was a good chance she was being held in a closet by a madman, and all she could think about was if her new tuner was broken. When she got out of this mess, she was seriously going to reevaluate her priorities. She reached for the device to make sure it was all right, but he didn’t let her even get close to it. The brute grabbed her wrist hard enough he would probably leave a bruise.

Her heart beat faster. She was in real danger here. But the bruiser had made one mistake. He’d uncovered her mouth. She intended on taking full advantage of that. She pulled in a lungful of air and got ready to scream.

He slapped a hand over her mouth, harder than he had the first time. He was so big he covered the entire lower half of her face with one hand. He squeezed her mid-section with his other arm until all the air she had taken in came out of her nose and mouth in a whoosh between his fingers.

“I don’t like screaming. Don’t try that again.” The growl in his voice sent her pulse speeding.

Always nice to know your killer’s preferences. She sincerely hoped she wouldn’t offend him if she screamed while he murdered her. Marly became aware of his impressively large appendage pressing into her lower back. Maybe murder wasn’t what he had in mind.

She made a sound in her throat and pulled her pelvis as far away from him as she could get.

He chuckled, not an encouraging sound. “Don’t flatter yourself, sweetheart. It’s from the adrenaline. I get a hard-on when I kill people too…or even when I diffuse bombs.”

He said the last word with too much emphasis. She was going to end up blown to bits by this crazy man who got sexually excited by killing people, and he was probably going to rape her first.

Black spots appeared on the edge of her vision. Her last thought was it was better to be unconscious for whatever was about to happen.

Hockey Hotties Blog Hop!
Hi everyone!

Yes, the hockey season starts again as of today! And to celebrate, some other authors and I have teamed up for this Hockey Hotties Blog Hop!

I'm also celebrating the release of Offside today! This is book 5 in my Heller brothers hockey series. Yes, it is finally Matt's story - I know many of you have been waiting for this. I hope the wait was worthwhile.

Offside has already had some great reviews. I have to admit I'm both excited and sad about this release. I want you all to meet Honey and love her and Matt, but I'm so sad this is the end of the Heller brothers. Crap. I'm getting teary just writing this.

Anyway, here's the blurb...

Honey Holbrook is trying hard to leave her past behind her and make a new life for herself. A former spoiled, rich, wild child, her attention-grabbing antics were tabloid fodder for years. Now she has a new job, a new home, and is staying out of the limelight. But the first day of the new job doesn’t go like she expects when her boss and coworkers make it clear she’s not wanted there, and the first project she has to work on is with pro hockey player Matt Heller.

Matt and Honey had a wild and wicked fling eight years ago when he was attending summer development camp for the California Condors – the NHL team Honey’s dad owns. But the relationship ended when they argued over the loser friends Honey hung around with and Matt had to return to college hockey. Before he left, Matt talked to Honey’s dad about Honey’s exploits. She felt betrayed and rejected, and threw herself even harder into her partying lifestyle while Matt tried to carve out a career for himself in the NHL.

Now Matt’s back with the Condors but recovering from a serious injury that has changed his whole outlook on life. He’s not impressed to be working with Honey Holbrook, although her cleaned up image arouses his curiosity. And arouses something else...

Check out these other great hockey authors participating in the Hockey Hotties Blog Hop   - we're all doing a giveaway at each blog. I'm giving away a signed print copy of Breakaway, with a pretty new "Offside" book thong made by ReVAMPed Designs and some other small shwag!  To enter, leave a comment about anything hockey related! Excited for the new season that starts today? Got a favorite team? Favorite player?

Note - ignore where it says to sign up to be part of the hop - sorry about that - the links to other authors' blogs work, though!

SLAMMED is out today!
Yay, we finally get Dylan's story!

We first met Dylan Schell in With Strings Attached, when he became the third in a sexy menage a trois with his best friend Matt, and Matt's friend with benefits, Corey. Dylan got kind of attached to Corey, but he was also struggling with some major issues in his pro surfing career. Since then, Dylan's been coping by doing a lot of partying - sex, drugs, rock and roll. Now, in Slammed, he's back in San Amaro, for a huge event in the Association of Surfing Professionals tour -- but he also has to take some business issues seriously, and he has to attend a wedding, and he's not too happy about all this responsible stuff. But Brooke helps him deal...

Great reviews so far for Slammed! I'm so thrilled.

Romance Junkies 4.5 BLUE RIBBONS "Get out your fans or put on the air conditioner and grab an ice cold drink since you'll be burning up as you read SLAMMED - a sweet but heat filled contemporary romance involving a professional surfer, the waves, the beaches, romance and love."

RT Book Reviews 4 STARS "Sparks fly right off the bat with PR wonk Brooke and pro surfer Dylan, and the will-they/won’t-they once they return to real life will keep readers guessing. . .This romance will have you dreaming of hot surfers and warm beaches as the weather cools."

And I really want to mention this review from the Risque Redhead Reads... I love the review overall, she really "got" the book. But a couple of things stand out for me.

"Brooke, let me tell you I loved being in this girl’s head and learning the cute and funny words she uses. She was a blast to read, there was not one thing I disliked about her. She was someone I could relate to from the first moment I met her. She was, for lack of a better description, a normal girl. Her family support is beautiful, her compassion for others is remarkable and her ability to love enormous. She is the perfect match in every way for Dylan and their chemistry is off the charts smokin’!"

One of my goals as a writer has been to write heroines that readers love. That hasn't always been the case, and I've been working on that for some time. I KNOW readers are harder on heroines than they are on heroes. But that's just a challenge to me, to write heroines who readers love. So a comment like that means SO much to me.

Also this:

"A side note if you will. Substance with sex. I have said this many times when it comes to books. I need a substance with my sex and with this series it is what you get. Now, I am a red blooded female and I love reading a good sex scene but with that you have to have a story or you lose me. There was never a point of getting lost here. There is no gratuitous sex that is thrown in there just to have a sex scene. Sex is important for relationships, for romantic relationships, it’s intimate, it is how we connect on the most basic level and sometimes it’s how relationships begin.  With Dylan and Brooke, as well as the rest of the residents in San Amaro, it was  as natural as the ocean creating a current or a wave."

This is something else that's important to me. I've had lots of feedback about my sex scenes -- I apparently do them pretty well. :-).  But it's important to me to have story, character, emotion, and to make the sex scenes meaningful...so this comment also means a lot to me.

I hope you love Dylan and Brooke too!

Save the date!
If you're in the Nashville area, I'm going to be there in October with fellow authors Erin Nicholas and PG Forte. We'd love to get together with any readers who can join us on Saturday October 19. (And hey - that's the day after my birthday, so you all can buy me birthday drinks! :-) ) We're thinking about meeting at the Cheesecake Factory, but stay tuned for confirmed details about time and location.

And while I'm updating you, I can let you know that Offside (October 1/13) is now available for pre-order:

Updates!
So, after all the cover reveals, I thought I should post a quick update about what's coming up for me (and oh yeah, get my website updated!)

Coming next is Slammed (September 3). This is the third (and last) (for now!) book in the San Amaro Singles series. In Slammed we reconnect with Dylan Schell, pro surfer, who we met in With Strings Attached. Dylan's a sexy bad boy pro athlete with some tough stuff to overcome.

After that is Offside, which I don't have an exact release date for, but I hope will be out early October. This is the fifth book (and last) (sadly, for sure) of my Heller Brothers hockey series. Yes - it is Matt Heller's story. Matt's all grown up since the last time we met up with him and it's time for his HEA!

Rhythm of Three will be out October 29. This is a follow up story to Rule of Three (it's a novella) so we find out more about how Kassidy, Chris and Dag are dealing with the complications of their relationship.

And then in January, it's You Really Got Me, a BDSM/suspense romance set in California wine country, where a sexy police chief and a determined winery owner struggle with their feelings for each other while a missing persons case turns into a murder investigation.

Another cover reveal!
Okay, with so many edits and new covers coming at me I know I'm going to screw something up and post the wrong cover or blurb somewhere!

Here's the latest - Rhythm of Three. This is a follow-up story to Rule of Three, and it will be out October 29/13!

Cover reveal!
Here it is! This is Book 5 in my Heller brothers hockey series - Matt Heller's story.

Thanks to the awesome Kim Killion for the cover design!

Release day for How to Love!
How to Love is my first menage a trois romance since Rule of Three - which many of you may have picked up during the recent free promotion. I was thrilled with the response to Rule of Three! If you enjoyed it, you will probably like How to Love:

Relationship, no…but threesome, hell yes!

Ever since Jules’s new neighbor moved in, she’s been undressing him in her mind. Mike is the fresh inspiration she needs to make her erotic photography studio a success, if she can convince him and his equally buff roommate, Carlos, to strip for her lens. And maybe indulge in a little off-camera fun as well.

But Jules isn’t too worried. She doesn’t do relationships, but she loves men and sex—and in her experience, most men are okay with that.

Judging from the raw emotions leaping from the images in Jules’s gallery, Mike senses there’s a lot going on beneath her flirtatious, slightly cynical exterior. He and Carlos are happy in their committed relationship, but they’ve always felt there’s a piece missing. They want a woman. Jules could be that woman.

A threesome with two committed men? Sounds like an emotionally risk-free dream come true for Jules. But when they make it clear they want more, her deepest fears push to the surface, straining bonds forged in incredible heat to the breaking point…

Warning: The book features two hot men brave enough to climb cliffs, strip naked for erotic photographs, have sex in a portrait studio and on a cliff, and who have the courage to teach a commitment-phobic woman how to love.

Listening to this week...
After the MMVA's last weekend, I paid more attention to the lyrics of this song, which I already liked. Now I LOVE! We all need an INNER NINJA!

Hey yo, I've been high and I've been real low
I've been beaten and broken but I healed though
So many ups and downs, roughed up and clowned
We all got problems, but we deal though
I'm tryin' to do better now, find my inner peace
Learn my art form, and find my inner Chi
When my backs on the wall, I don't freeze up
Nah, I find my inner strength and I re-up
Here we go, I know I've never been the smartest or wisest
But I realize what it takes
Never dwell in the dark cause the sun always rises
But gotta make it to the next day
It's a feeling that you get in your lungs when you run
Like you're runnin' outta air and your breath won't come
And you (uh) wheezin', gotta keep it movin'
Find that extra (uhn) and push your way through it

Nobody's gonna see me comin'
Nobody's gonna hear a sound
No matter how hard they tryin'
No stoppin' me since I've found
My inner ninja [4x]
