Thought I'd post one more picture from my vacation. That's me and my kids, our first morning in Santa Barbara, sitting at the end of Stearns Wharf. We could hear the sea lions barking out on the buoy. They made us laugh.

Yes this blog is a day late but I spent all day Monday travelling and had no internet access. Now I'm home from my wonderful vacation in California. But that wonderful vacation meant I got no writing done whatsoever last week.

But that's not entirely true, because as you know from reading this weekly blog, writing isn't just about writing. Huh? I mean, there's the editing and the researching and the planning, and also the business of writing. And I did do all of those other things last week. I got another round of edits on my next Ellora's Cave release, Taming Tara, and I did work on those during my vacation when we had some quiet time back at the hotel. I also did some research - I went to the historical museum and the library to do research for the historical romance I have "in progress". I did some other research on a book that is in the planning stages by travelling to the Santa Ynez Valley and really, all my time in Santa Barbara, Montecito and Ventura could count as research because I set nearly all my books there, or in fictional California towns just like them. I did a little planning work and I also kept up with the "business of writing" with emails and Twitter and blogging. So it's not like I wasn't doing ANYTHING over the last week :-)

I've been pretty distracted from my writing over the last month or so, as you'll know from reading my blog, and I got some good news last week that I think will help with that. I'm really hoping that I can get my head back into writing and not thinking about the "business" of writing and start being really productive again. Wish me luck!

Well this is kind of funny, Today I go to post my "What I'm Reading Wednesday" blog and I checked back to see what I posted last week and...discovered last week's post was still in draft. It never posted. *Sigh*. So here are 2 weeks worth of what I'm reading:


Last week:
I finished Renegaed by Lora Leigh. I think I said enough about this book last week.

I'm now reading Seize the Fire by Laura Kinsale. Can't. Put. It. Down.
I so admire how all her heroes and heroines are so different.

This week:
I finished Seize the Fire. I loved the book, my only complaint was the ending. It was heart wrenching, hearing what happened to Sheridan, I loved the emotion of it, but the ending where Olympia reacts and accepts him seemed a bit too abrupt. I think it would have been more satisfying with just a bit more, there.

Then I read Just My Type by Erin Nicholas. Great story! I did love the character growth but once more, there was a character who had me on the edge of being so frustrated! When Mac married Sara and then wouldn't sleep with her, in fact abandoned her, I just wanted to yell at her for putting up with that! But liked the ending.

Now I'm reading Match Me If You Can by Susan Elizabeth Phillips.

Before I talking about what I'm writing this week, I have to mention the Nine Naughty Novelists Anniversary Contest !  We're having a month long scavenger hunt and all the details are at our blog. Over the last week I have been writing again. Not a lot, but some. I'm still quite distracted by a lot of "writing business" issues but getting better. I was working on my new menage idea (as I mentioned, tentatively titled With Strings Attachd) and then go a little stuck. I believe I may have experienced writer's block!  My solution: work on something else. So I went back to Gabe's story and started zipping along with it. And it's going pretty well, actually! Since this story is set in Santa Barbara and that's where I actually am this week, hopefully the beautiful setting will provide inspiration. (see photo below!)

Also worked on edits last week, first round edits of my next Ellora's Cave release, Taming Tara. Just got second round of edits from my editor yesterday so will be working on that again this week.

I like these little teaser excerpts! Here's another (unedited) one from my upcoming Ellora's Cave release Taming Tara. As you may know, this is a modern day BDSM version of the Taming of the Shrew. I hate to call Tara a shrew or even a bitch, but she's a strong, determined woman who learns a lot about herself. 

A short time later Joe carried a tray with a plate stacked with toast and peanut butter and two cups of coffee—both black, no cream or milk to be found, so he hoped Tara could handle that—down the hall into the bedroom. Tara rolled over in bed as he walked in, half awake.


Her honey-blonde hair hung in tousled strands around her face, eyes sleepy, mouth swollen. She was fucking sexy as hell. His dick twitched.

“I thought I smelled something,” she murmured, shoving her hair back.

He set the tray on a dresser and carried her cup of coffee to her.

She sat up and took it in both hands. “You made breakfast?” She peered up at him.

“Yup. Not much to choose from. Sorry your coffee’s black.” He paused.

She shrugged and sipped it. “I can drink it black. Mmm. This is good.”

“And I found a loaf of bread in the freezer.”

She shook her head, eyes questioning him. “Um…thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” He sat on the bed, the plate of toast between them, his own cup in his hands, and leaned forward to kiss her.

“I’m starving,” she said. “Cheese and crackers wasn’t enough dinner for me.”

“Me either.”

“Do I get to get dressed today?” she asked him, with just a hint of snark.

He considered that. “I don’t know. I’d love to keep you naked, but the truth is, that just makes me horny, and without condoms…”

She lowered her chin. “I have to go home.”

“Why?”

“I…uh…”

“If you tell me you have to go in to the office, there’s no way in hell you’re getting any clothes back.”

She blinked at him. “Uh…”

He grinned. “It’s the weekend. Neither of us has any reason to go back.”

“Yes, but…”

He shrugged and took another bite of toast. “So, we’ll get condoms. There must be somewhere around here.”

“Santa Ynez.” She snapped her mouth shut. Joe grinned.

She sighed. “It’s only a few miles away. It’s kind of a cute little town.”

“Perfect,” he said. “I’ve never been there. Let’s go check out Santa Ynez.”

“I’m going to need clothes.”

He laughed at the waspish tone in her voice. “Oh, all right, if you insist.”

“And I need a shower.”

He grinned and stroked up her spine. “A shower sounds good. Let’s go.”

I've been working on a new story idea this week, tentatively titled With Strings Attached. Got this idea last week and had to start it. I know, I know, writing ADD yet again. It's going pretty well, although only about 10,000 words in.

Also did a big round of editing on my next Ellora's Cave release - editing commas, that is. Sheesh. Why can't I get it right? Different publishers have their own style preferences and I never seem to get it right. This time I was taking them out and putting them right back in somewhere else. In fact the majority of the edits were commas. Oy. I guess it's better than having to rewrite something major though.

Well I haven't read a whole heck of a lot this week! I'm now reading Renegade by Lora Leigh. This is an auto buy for me, but I think might be my last one. At least for a while. Having a definite feelings of deja vu. All seems very similar to all her other books. And this book is little repetitious, too, I'm sorry to say, with a not very strong conflict keeping them apart.

 The photo this week doesn't have anything to do with either whips or WIPs but it's a nice tree in my neighborhood, and today was a beautiful fall day.

This past week I have done some writing but I'm back to bouncing around from one project to another. I need to FOCUS, MAN!

I got a Great Idea for a new story and was anxious to start it, so I did that. Meanwhile I got a few more reviews for Power Struggle (great reviews - yay!) and it seems everyone who reviews this book asks for Gabe's story. I've been planning to write it and had the basic idea sketched out, but this made me want to work more on it, so I've actually been working on both stories!

Which means I let my historical go for now. I was feeling a little stuck with that one anyway, so it's okay, but I had hoped to have a draft done for next month so I can do some research when I'm in California.

Sometimes it's good to have several things on the go at once, so that if I do feel stuck with one, I can move on to another. But then sometimes I think I need to focus on one project and stick to it until it's done. I guess there's no right or wrong, as long as I keep working on something!

I got my signed sealed and delivered-to-my-inbox contract yesterday for my next Ellora's Cave release - Taming Tara.

This book is a modern-day BDSM version of The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare. I will be blogging more about how the similarities between the two and how Will inspired me to write this story, so watch for that closer to release date (which I don't yet know but stay tuned!)

Although this story is also set in Santa Barbara and the fictional Le Chateau features in it, I actually wrote this book before I wrote Power Struggle. So unfortunately, Gabe does not make an appearance in this book. But for all of those who've asked, after reading Power Struggle, for Gabe's story - I am working on it!

For now, here's a sneak peek at Taming Tara (unedited, of course):

Joe stared across the main room at Le Château. That could not be Tara Lockhart leaning against the bar over there, so fucking hot in a shiny black dress that looked like it had been laminated to her curves, and heels that could seriously injure a man. Her honey-blonde hair had been scraped up into a tight, high pony tail. Her eyes were wide, her lips parted as she met his gaze.

Oh yeah, that was her.

Busted, sweetheart. Joe’s pulse leaped and he couldn’t restrain the smile curving his lips. Tara Lockhart, secret Dominatrix.

Huh? That wasn’t the impression he’d gotten of her earlier. Sure, she was strong. Intelligent. Confident. Bossy. But that flicker he’d seen in her eyes, the way she’d hesitated when he’d greeted her, made him question her domination. Somehow it didn’t ring true.

He crossed the room toward her as if drawn by a magnet. No way was he going to do her any favors by pretending not to recognize her or disappearing. He was going to have his fun with this, and the anticipation of it sizzled through his veins.

Like arousal.

He stopped in front of her, stared down at her, not saying a word.

“Hi,” she finally said weakly, her eyes dropping briefly.

“Well. Tara. Imagine my surprise seeing you here.”

She swallowed but lifted her chin. “Likewise.”

He looked her over, up, down, then raised his gaze back to her face. “Very nice.”

She pressed her lips together. No thanks for the compliment. He wanted to laugh.

"I had no idea you were into the lifestyle.”

“I’m not.”

“Ah.” He lifted a brow. “Just…exploring?”

“No. Well.” She sucked her top lip in briefly. “I’m uh…checking this place out.”

“Ah. Finding yourself.”

“I’m not finding myself! I know exactly who I am.” Irritation tightened her voice.

He nodded. “Of course.”

“Don’t patronize me! What the hell are you doing here? If my grandpa knew…”

He lifted a brow. “Does he know you’re here?”

She blinked. “No.”

“Then we’re on even ground,” he murmured.

She closed her eyes briefly. He could almost hear the curse words he was sure she wanted to spit out. “I guess we are,” she finally said.

This week I finished Sweet Temptation by Maya Banks. First of all - my heavens this book has a lot of typos. That is so unfortunate. This story was as hot as Maya`s usually are, but I have to say the scene with the four men just went a little over the top for me. Now I`ve written BDSM stories and I know that it can make sense for a man to give a woman what she wants but this just seemed a little incredible. But then again it`s a fantasy, right? I've read this exact trope before though, how a man will share a woman with other men (three at the same time, even!) because it's what she wants until the end of the story when he admits his love for her and suddenly, wham, no more sharing, because she's HIS. I do like a possessive man, and I suppose it can be explained by the fact that he loves her now, whereas before he didn't...or did he? But if he loves her and still wants to give her what she wants, why not now? A question to ponder.

I am now reading Renegade by Lora Leigh, whose stories are much smiliar to Maya's.

If you read Friday's post you'll already know I did not have a productive week writing last week. I was completely distracted by other stuff. The week ended on a positive note, thankfully, but it's been hard to get back into the writing.

Right now I'm also doing an on-line workshop through Writer U which is excellent. I've been doing my homework for the course, part of which is analyzing my own WIP. I've actually been analyzing several of my WIPs, including one which is completed (but I still call it a work "in progress" because I could keep editing and tweaking until the day books are published!). I'm finding this workshop really valuble - so far I've tweaked my characters, rewritten my opening lines (about ten times!) and fine-tuned some scenes.

So even though I haven't been writing, that all counts as work, I guess.

This week I got very disturbing bad news (writing related) that has thrown me off my writing. Also got a royalty statement with disappointing sales of my June release Lost and Found. My husband has been so busy this week I haven't even been able to talk to him about all this and now he's gone golfing for the weekend.

Thankfully I belong to the BEST GROUP IN THE WORLD, the Nine Naughty Novelists - their support is incredible and means so much to me. Special thanks to PG Forte. And to my critique partner Nara Malone, too. Too bad my internet went out Wednesday night and was out until late Thursday night, because my support is all on-line! I felt so cut off from the world without internet access! Not to mention I had business commitments that I needed to be on line for. I had to stop at a Starbucks on my way home from work, with my laptop, to do a few things. Then while I was trying to cook for guests in from out of town, the internet repair guy was there asking me stuff I don't know, and then the guests arrived and I drank a lot of wine.

There's my week in a nutshell.

I finished Corralled by Lorelei James. I really enjoyed it. I know what I'm getting when I read one of her books. I liked how this one kept me wondering how the book was going to end, because though it was a menage story it wasn't clear from the start who the "couple" was. I did guess right and I was happy!

Right now I'm reading Sweet Temptation by Maya Banks. This is one of the ones that fianlly became available at the Sony Store. This is Micah's story, who has been in Maya's earlier "Sweet" books and it's cool learning more about him.

I've been working on my historical story this past week. I hesitate to say too much about it because I'm still not sure if I can do this. I'm still in love with the idea of the story and the characters are starting to really grow on me too. I find it slow going, though, because there are still so many details that I need to research. I find myself wishing for an expert in this time period to be standing beside me with all the answers to my questions. Don't think it's going to be that easy though! I'm about 12,000 words in, so it's a good start.

I'm also doing a workshop right now on pacing, through Romance U, with Mary Buckham. I've already learned a lot and we're just into the first week. I'm doing my homework and then applying what I've learned to my WIP, also to other stories that I have sitting finished. They can always be better, and I know that my WIP is already better for taking this course. I hope the rest of the workshop is just as good. I always love to learn more and find ways to improve my writing.

I finished Shadowheart by Laura Kinsale. This story just grabbed me and pulled me along, I loved it. So emotionally intense. What a hero. What a heroine. It impresses me that her characters are always so different thought her heroes do often seem to be quite tortured.

I'm now reading Corralled by Lorelei James. I've read all her Samhain books and now this one! It's just as hot as her Rough Riders books, too.

I have quite a lengthy list of books to read now thanks to the Sony store suddenly making all the books I want available to me here in Canada! I went on quite a little spending spree the other day. Check back to see what I bought!

I've had a great week! In some ways it doesn't feel like I've accomplished a whole lot, but in others, it does!

I did get some writing done on a couple of WIPs. I started on my historical and wrote 4000 words, then realized I had started at the wrong place. Did a bit more research and thought out my new opening. Haven't written it yet. Maybe tomorrow.

Also did some work on a finished story that needed some revisions. I've changed the characters, planned out a different ending and a few other things that needed to be added, and I'm working my way through those changes.

But a lot of this week was spent working on "non writing" things - if you haven't been by the Nine Naughty Novelists blog recently, you need to check it out! We've finally unveiled our "Soopersekrit Project" which is: THE ZILLIONAIRE VAMPIRE COWBOY'S SECRET WEREWOLF BABIES.

We`ve been planning to do a serial story ever since we started this group and in the last few months have had a number of brainstorming sessions which have been fall-off-your-chair funny! What a great group of writers these naughty novelists are! We`ve had so much fun and now it`s almost time to unleash our wild creativity on the world. This Thursday (September 9) we`ll debut our story at our blog.

This week was busy planning our promotion stragegy and I worked on the trailer for the story, which you can see here.
